Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund are bound for Chicago this August!
Two of Europe’s biggest soccer clubs will face off this summer with England's Chelsea FC and Germany’s Borussia Dortmund set to play at Soldier Field, Chicago, on Wednesday August 2 at 7.30pm.
Chelsea FC are one of England’s most successful clubs and are the only club in London to have won the UEFA Champions League, whilst their competition Borussia Dortmund are in the midst of fighting for their first domestic league title since 2012.
This tantalising fixture will provide American fans a unique opportunity to see their homegrown stars in Christian Pulisic of Chelsea and Giovanni Reyna of Dortmund. Chicago will also get the opportunity to see some of the best players from around the world including Chelsea’s N’golo Kanté and Kai Havertz as well as Dortmund’s Marco Reus and Julian Brandt.
It will be a special occasion for young Chelsea goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina who grew up in a greater Chicago and made his professional debut with local Major League Soccer side, Chicago Fire.
This will be the first fixture of Chelsea’s USA summer tour against opposition outside of the United Kingdom.
For the Black and Yellow, this will be the third time the club has played at Soldier Field with the first fixture taking place in 1954 when Dortmund played a seven-match tour in the United States. The club has a strong following in Chicago and will likely see a strong turn out from their devoted fans.
Both iconic clubs around the world, the two teams only met for the first time in a competitive match this year when the Blues prevailed two goals to one on aggregate in the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
“We are delighted to visit Chicago as part of our US tour in July and play in an iconic venue at Soldier Field. We are proud of our strong fanbase in the US and we look forward to meeting our fans in Chicago this summer,” said Tom Glick, President of Business at Chelsea FC.
“After playing against Manchester United in Las Vegas a couple of days earlier it‘s a privilege for us to then clash with Chelsea FC, another Premier League heavyweight. Having met just recently in the knock-out stage of the UEFA Champions League, there‘s still a score to settle against them. Also, returning to Chicago and Soldier Field is special to us, almost like a home away from home as we‘re going to play here for the third time already over the decades,“ says BVB Managing Director Carsten Cramer.
“Chicago is one of the great sporting cities. We are very excited to bring these two world class teams to Chicago to play each other this summer,” added Geoff Jones, CEO of TEG Sport.
“With Borussia Dortmund in great form, Chelsea’s strong following in the USA, and this being the only English Premier League team visiting the region this summer, we are expecting demand to be strong. These teams last played each other in the knockout stages in Europe this year and we are looking forward to seeing fans from Germany, the UK and across the USA come to Chicago for a fantastic football experience and to witness the next chapter in these two teams' rivalry.”
